We are currently offering our program to fourth, fifth and sixth graders in over 100 classes at 35 schools in four school districts (Los Angeles Unified School District, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, Burbank Unified School District and Paramount Unified School District), reaching over 4,000 kids in the greater Los Angeles area.

The student population in all of these schools is overwhelmingly low-income:

94% of the children at Hillcrest Drive Elementary School, 97% of the children at Santa Monica Boulevard Community Charter School, 98% of the children at Leo Politi Elementary School, 100% of the children at Sheridan Street School participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program. (As we expand and add additional schools, we intend to continue to focus our efforts on schools that serve a pre-dominantly low-income population.)

Here are statistics from schools that are participating in the rock the classroom program during the 2007-2008 school year:

Angeles Mesa Elementary (Leimert Park)

• 86% of children participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program
• Has a rank of 1 out of 10 on the 2006 API: its children score well below average on tests.
• Serves a population that is 57% African-America and 42% Hispanic; 26% of students are English Language Learners.
      
  Arlington Heights Elementary School (Arlington Heights)
      
• 94% of children participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program
• Has a rank of 2 out of 10 on the 2006 API: its children score well below average on tests.
• Serves a population that is 86% Hispanic and 14% Hispanic; 63% of students are English Language Learners.
